Description Trichomes free-floating, solitary, cylindrical, tapering slightly towards ends, straight, slightly bent, less frequently irregularly screw-like coiled, irregularly and distinctly constricted at the cross-walls. Cells cylindrical to barrel-shaped, 2.5-12 (16) x (1.7) 2-2.4 (-4?) μm; apical cells conically narrowed and rounded. Heterocytes only terminal, at one or both ends of a trichome, drop-like, with rounded-pointed ends. Aki¬netes cylindrical-oval, developing near the ends of trichomes, adjacent to the terminal heterocytes or slightly distant from them (separated by one to several vegetative cells), usually solitary, less frequently up to 3 in a row, (7) 8.5-18 (22) x (2.4) 3-5 (5.5) μm.  [details]

Identification Variable species (see synonyms, and comp., e. g., Komarek & al. 1999, Komarkova & al. 1999, Saker & al. 1999, Moustaka-Gouni & al. 2009 and others); populations consisting almost completely of screw-like coiled trichomes occur in Australia (Baker & Fabbro 1990). Populations from distant areas are genetically diversified (Dyble & al. 2002; Gugger & al. 2005). Geitler (1935) described the formation of fine sheaths around trichomes (var. lyngbyoides; under stress condi¬tions?). Saker & al. (1999) described two morphological forms from Queensland, Australia. Numerous populations from South America more closely resemble other described species, e. g. C. africana, C. cuspis or C. sinuosa[details]
