Etymology [The name of the species was derived from Latin fuscus, brown, and sub, under, here: almost, and referred to the "rostbraune Farbe" = rubiginose colour of the exoskeleton, a character which Zelinka emphasized twice.] [details]
Synonymy Synonymy according to Zelinka (1928, p. 235):
Echinoderes dujardinii Clap., Metschnikoff, E., 1865, pp. 459, 460. Fig. 9, 10, Taf. XXXV.
Echinoderes dujardinii Clap., Metschnikoff, E., 1869, p. 192.
Echinoderes setigera Grff., Levander, K. M., 1900, pp. 19, 20.
It is a bit confusing that both Echinoderes subfuscus and Habroderes subfuscus are not listed in the station list of Zelinka's monograph on pp. 178-189 and that the specimens of Metschnikoff (1869) from Salerno are not mentioned under distribution on p. 236. [details]
Taxonomy not E. dujardinii of Metschnikoff (1865, 1869) and not of Levander (1900) but E. subfuscus [details]
Type locality Zelinka (1928, p. 236) lost specimens and illustrations of adult E. subfuscus because of events around World War I and provided information about the new species based on his memory and on the juvenile stage moulting to the adult. The material of the juvenile stages originated from Barcola and Portorose in the Gulf of Triest, so these locations have to be regarded as the type localities. [details]
