Taxonomic remark Ho¨glund (1948) renamed his species T. pusilla
Ho¨ glund, 1947 as T. quadriloba, because it was a junior
secondary homonym of the Permian species Serpula pusilla
Geinitz, 1848 which was thought at the time to be a
Trochammina. Because Geinitz’s taxon is not a Trochamminacea
but a Miliolina, Ho¨ glund’s new name was
unnecessary (Bro¨nnimann & Whittaker, 1988a). As T.
quadriloba was proposed before 1961, the name T. pusilla is
permanently invalid [International Commission on Zoological
Nomenclature (ICZN), 1999, Article 59 (b)] and
cannot automatically be reinstated (Bro¨nnimann & Whittaker,
1988a; Kaminski, 2004). To this end, Bro¨nnimann &
Whittaker (1988a) applied to the ICZN for the conservation
of T. pusilla Ho¨glund. The ICZN has not yet ruled on this
application and we retain the name pusilla, pending the
outcome of this case. [details]
