Etymology Not stated. The generic name Ceratonereis if composed by the New Latin prefix from Greek origin cerato-, meaning 'horned' or 'horn-like', followed by the name of the genus Nereis Linnaeus, 1758, the type genus of the family, and it might refer to the presence of elongated cephalic, tentacular, dorsal and ventral cirri: ''appendices lobi cephalici, cirri tentaculares, dorsuales et ventrales elongati'' (Kinberg, 1865: 170).
