Etymology Not stated. Presumably the generic name is composed by the name of the genus Nereis Linnaeus, 1758, the type of the family 'Nereidea', in which the genus Nereiphylla was originally placed, and the suffix of Greek origin -phyll, referring to leaves or leaf structures, and probably refers to the leaflike dorsal and ventral cirri of the taxon: "Pieds uniramés, composés d'un seul rang de soies déliées et d'un seul acicule entre deus cirrhes foliacés, le supérieur beaucoup plus grand que l'inférieur" (Blainville, 1828: 466).  [details]
