Lectotype BMNH BMNH.1921.5.1.3711, geounit Saint Andrews Bay Scotland [details]
From editor or global species database
Etymology Not stated but evidently Melinna elisabethae is named for McIntosh's mother Eliza or Elizabeth (note the 'z' spelling) as he states (1914: p.106) that "specimens of this species were first obtained in Britain by my mother in the stomachs of haddocks ..." The 'z' was permissible spelling in Latin, if not common, so it is not clear why McIntosh used the 's' spelling. [details]
Lectotype Designated Mackie & Pleijel (1995: 111) BMNH.1921.5.1.3711, locality Saint Andrews [details]
Publication date McIntosh (1922: 86) believed that the publication date of Melinna elisabethae was 1914. In this he was wrong according to Mackie & Pleijel (1995: 111) who treat a nomen-nudum-style mention in the Challenger report 1885 record for M. maculata from the Caribbean as having sufficient indications of the nature of M elisabethae to justify changing the date of establishment to decades earlier in 1885 rather than 1914. They do this without an explanation and without making clear that McIntosh's 1885 mention was not intended to establish a new species. Instead they refer to the unfortunate mention euphemistically as "the neglected original description". It is likely both that McIntosh had forgotten the single 1885 in-text-flow name mention (otherwise referred to in text as "the species from St Andrews") by 1914 and 1922 (the British monograph), and had at the time in 1885 made a mistake in mentioning a name when it was not yet described. The name included should have been deleted and there would have been no premature publication. Possibly the earlier date may have an effect on synonymies. [details]
