Synonymy The synonymy of Pallas', Esper's and Schmidt's material is uncertain, and suggestions that this species is a senior synonym of Ircinia variabilis Schmidt remain to be demonstrated (difficult because type and other original material is lacking). A separate entry 'Ircinia fasciculata sensu Vacelet, 1959' is made to accomodate the many references to a common genuine Ircinia occurring in the Mediterranean, for which we now employ the name Ircinia variabilis (Schmidt, 1862).
