Taxonomy This is a replacement for Schmidt's Geodia tuberosa. According to Lendenfeld (1903: 113) the name of Schmidt is preoccupied by Geodia tuberosa Schweigger, 1819. However, this is debatable, as it is obvious from Schweigger's book that the name is a misprint for Lamarck's Geodia gibberosa. The figures provided by Schweigger (pl III figs 18 and 19) are stated in the legend to be drawn after Lamarck's specimen in the Paris Museum. In the table listing the 'zoophytes' known to Schweigger at the end of his book he mentions Geodia gibberosa as the only known Geodia (and refers to pl. III figs. 18 and 19 again).
Perhaps this is a matter for the ICZN to make a decision upon, but for the time being we maintain here Geodia tuberosa sensu Schmidt, 1862 as accepted and refer G. tuber into its synonymy. [details]
