Biology Type of larval development: direct (non-planktotrophic) inferred from paucispiral protoconch. [details]
Diagnosis Shell fusiform, up to 15 mm, with a moderately high spire of shouldered whorls. Protoconch small, of little more than one whorl. Teleoconch with a sculpture of axial lamellae and spiral cords ((4-5 on penultimate whorl) forming a coarse lattice. Outer lip simple, not thickemed but with the termination of cords reflected inside as folds. Siphonal canal long and delicate, often curved, widely open. Colour white.
The living animal is commonly covered by a sponge, which fills in the depressions of the sculpture

Distribution Eastern Atlantic, From Iceland and northern Norway to Morocco; deeper than 50 m in the north, deeper than 200 m in the south; Gorringe seamount, rare in 180-360 m. Some forms possibly attributed to this species occur in the Azores. Mediterranean only in the Alboran Sea. [details]
