Synonymy G.O. Sars (1878) mentioned the strong similarity between Altenaeum dawsoni and Mysella maltzani Verkrüzen, 1876. Because of this Madsen (1949) and Bernard (1979b) presumed that Altenaeum dawsoni should be considered a junior synonym of Montacuta dawsoni Jeffreys, 1864. According to Backeljau et al. (1984a) however, two separate species should be considered. [details]
