Nomenclature Linnaeus (1758: 787) does not give a name for Serpula spirorbis from a preceding author, but he lists four relevant works from which he derived the worm. [details]
Taxonomy The Serpula spirorbis of authors is sometimes confused, see for instance Fleming (1825:245) and at times may even have included misidentified Vermetidae (noted Tryon 1886: 251 referring to an assignment in Gmelin 13th edition of Systema Naturae, p.3740). These subsequent misidentifications do not affect the validity of the name. [details]Unreviewed
Type locality Atlantic Ocean, Europe [details]
