Diagnosis Original diagnosis by Ehlers (1913: 468): "Hesionide mit drei fadenförmigen, ungegliederten Fühlern und zwei dicken, ungegliederten Palpen am vieräugigen Kopflappen, mit sechs Paar Fühlercirren, mit einästigem Ruder, mit starkem, dorsalem Zahn in der Rüsselröhre." [details]
Etymology The new generic name is composed by the name of the genus Irma Grube, 1878 (Hesionidae) followed by the Latin suffix -ula, meaning 'small one'. It refers to the similarities of the new genus with the genus Irma, and also to the characteristic short segments of the new taxon: "Ich halte für diese Hesionide die Aufstellung einer in die Nähe der Gattung Irma zu stellenden neuen Gattung für geboten. Habituell ist für das Tier die Kürze der Segmente charakteristisch" (Ehlers, 1913: 469). [details]
Taxonomy The genus was originally erected in the family Hesionidae by Ehlers (1913: 468), and later moved to Syllidae by Day (1967: 266). Fauchald (1977: 83, 84) and Pleijel (1998: 159) retained Irmula in the Syllidae. [details]From regional or thematic species database
Distribution This genus has been cited in some ecological lists for the Mediterranean area. Since no taxonomic re-descriptions from European waters are up to now available we herein consider its presence doubt. [details]
