The finding of Streptosyllis arenae Webster and Benedict (Polychaeta, Syllidae), a new species for the Mediterranean fauna, in sandy bottoms close to the mouth of Arno River is reported.
The morphological characteristics of this species are discussed and compared with those of the other two species of the genus Streptosyllis (S. websteri and S. templadoi) up to now known for the Mediterranean Sea.
