Etymology Not stated in Savigny (1822: 45). The name appears to be a latinized form of the female Greek name Λυκαστη (Lykaste or Lycaste), with at least three different people of that name known in Greek mythology. Lycaste is also a genus of orchid in botany. [details]

Grammatical gender Feminine as Lycaste is a Greek female given name [details]

Homonymy There is no Lycastis homonym authored by Audouin & Milne Edwards (1933). Their usage is simply of Savigny's genus. Hartman Catalogue records the name as a homonym, but that is without a doubt not correct. [details]

Synonymy Hartman (1959) comments on Lycastis. "Briefly summarized, it has been shown that Lycastis Savigny, 1822 was erected for two species, Nereis versicolor Muller, a true Nereinae, and Nereis armillaris Muller, a syllidae of the genus Typosyllis. Lycastis is thus a synonym of Nereis Linnaeus, 1758."
But this is incorrect. Savigny p.45 refers only Nereis armillaris to Lycastis (Nereis versicolor is a paragraph above & is referred to Lycoris), and thus Lycastis is a junior synonym of Syllis (Typosyllis). [details]
