Status Lavesque et al (2021: 35) compared what is known of the morphology of Terebella gigantea to Loimia ramzega Lavesque et al 2017 because both are extremely large species of the English Channel coast. They concluded that despite this, that Loimia ramzega was not a match to what characters could be extracted from the description of Montagu (1819), and that the T. gigantea uncini (however as determined by McIntosh, 1922, not Montagu) were not the same. They place Terebella gigantea as a nomen dubium. They comment that Montagu never designated and deposited type material. However, this does not mean his specimens did not exist beyond his lifetime. They did, and it should be noted that his whole collection was purchased by Natural History Museum, London, from his estate (Read 2019: 17), and that some of Montagu's spirit collection material does still exist in the museum. Martin et al (2022 regard Loimia gigantea (Montagu,1819) as a valid species and regard Loimia ramzega Lavesque et al, 2017 from Brittany as its junior synonym. They do not present a formal synonymy or taxon description for Loimia gigantea plus L ramzega as synonym, therefore the usages have not been adopted at WoRMS. [details]
