Distribution The specimens that Johnston attributed to Valla ciliata [was Lumbricus ciliatus] were collected from Berwick Bay. Johnston (1865) does not state which Berwick, but there are at least two possibilities, one on the S Firth of Forth and the other a little further south in Northumberland. Johnston lived in the Northumberland Berwick-upon-Tweed, 55.771,-2.007, just south of the Scottish border. [details]

Taxonomy Müller (1773) had long ago described Lumbricus ciliatus which Johnston placed in a new genus, Valla. However, this is a Capitella, a much older genus. Eisig (1887: 850) and later McIntosh (1912: 124) point this synonymy out [details]

Authority The author is Müller as the species Johnston described is clearly a recombination from Lumbricus ciliatus Müller (1773). Hartman catalogue (1959: 447) is incorrect in attributing the authority to Johnston. This mistake probably was picked up from the works Hartman had consulted, including Eisig, who attributes Valla ciliata to Johnston without listing Müller's earlier name also, although he lists other Lumbricus names in his synonymy.  [details]
