Etymology "furcifera", fork bearer or fork-bearing [details]
Grammatical gender Not stated, but Grube described for S. furcifera forked spines in the opercular funnel as well as the verticil, thus Latin furca ‘fork’, combined with adjectival suffix –fer -a -um ‘bear'. Lewis & Short (1891: 795) include ‘furcifera’ as a feminine noun meaning phallus, but it is unlikely this was Grube’s derivation. 'furcifer' is the masculine form. Furcillata would be a more obvious adjectival form.
