Biology Type of larval development: direct (non-planctotrophic) denoted by paucispiral protoconch. [details]
Diagnosis Shell 3.0 to 3.6 mm high, with protoconch of a little more than 1.25 whorls, and teleoconch of four whorls. Protoconch smooth, teleoconch with strong, slightly flexuous axial ribs (ca. 14-15 on the penultimate whorl) which on some specimens are slightly protruding adapically along the suture. Body whorl rounded, with periumbilical area nearly smooth except for a very vague indication of spiral cords. Teleoconch with characteristic “Porosalvania” microsculpture consisting of minute (ca. 1 µm) pits randomly distributed, visible only under high magnification of scanning electron microscope. Outer lip thickened externally mostly in the adapical part, at some distance from the edge, then thinning out to a cutting edge; smooth inside. Shell white.
This species most resembles "Benthonellania" fayalensis (Watson, 1886), which differs in having a suprasutural thread on the protoconch, distinct spirals on the periumbilical area and in having a less tightly appressed inner lip. Porosalvania decipiens Gofas, 2007 is found in deeper water and has indistinct spirals, one of them usually marking an angle on the whorls at a distance from the suture. [details]
