The ingestion, fecundity, growth rates and culture of theharpacticoid copepod, Tisbe furcata, fed different algalspecies at different cell densities were studied. It was foundthat Tisbe furcata initiated feeding at an algalconcentration of 2.5 cells μl−1 for Rhinomonasreticulata and 8 cells μl−1 for Skeletonemacostatum but a higher concentration of 30 cells μl−1was needed for the flagellate, Pavlova lutheri. Althoughthe larval growth rates of T. furcata fed on R. reticulata and S. costatum were similar (P?005), they were significantly higher than that of T. furcata fed on P. lutheri (P<0.05). Theconcentrations of algal diets optimal for the populationgrowth rate of T. furcata varied with algal species asfollows: Skeletonema costatum at 80 cells μl−1,Rhinomonas reticulata at 15 cells μl−1 and Pavlova lutheri, at 90 cells μl−1.
