Taxonomy The recognition of Patella aspera Röding, 1798 as distinct from Patella ulyssiponensis Gmelin, 1791 is based on Christiaens (1973: 1331) who suggested to use the name Patella ulyssiponensis aspera for the subspecies of Patella ulyssiponensis present on the Atlantic islands, and then the work of Weber & Hawkins (2005) showing that genetic differenciation between island and mainland populations supports species-level distinction.
Whereas there are no reasons to doubt the taxonomic conclusion, the choice of the name aspera for the island populations seems poorly supported. Both Patella aspera Röding, 1798 and Patella aspera Lamarck, 1819 are based on the same figure of Favanne de Montcervelle (1780: pl. 2 fig. G2), for which no locality is given and the name (vol. 1 p. 465) "soleil des Patagons" suggesta a South American origin, is not attached in any way to the Atlantic archipelagoes.  [details]
