Taxonomy Bucquoy, Dautzenberg & Dollfus (1890) summarized the complex history of misidenfifications regarding this species. The specific name discors, which correctly applies to the boreal species Musculus discors (Linnaeus, 1767), was used for this species by Poli (1795), Montagu (1803), Turton (1819) and others following a lead by Da Costa (1778), therefore reports of "discors" for localities south of the British Isles and in the Mediterranean should be understood as denoting Musculus marmoratus (Forbes, 1844) [= subpictus].
Montagu (1803) correctly distinguished both species, but introduced a new taxon Mytilus discrepans which is a synonym of the Arctic discors, and erroneously used the name discors for Musculus marmoratus (Forbes, 1844) [= subpictus].
Lamarck (1819) independently introduced Modiolus discrepans, based on Da Costa's erroneous concept of Mytilus discors i.e. Musculus marmoratus (Forbes, 1844) [= subpictus]. The name discrepans Lamarck, 1819 has also been used for Mediterranean Musculus marmoratus (Forbes, 1844) [= subpictus]. [details]
