Description Thallus fine, membranaceous, consisting of fascicle-like bundles, brigh blue-green or olive green. Trichomes up to 1 mm long, straight or slightly coiled, occasion¬ally ring-like coiled, (1.5) 1.8-3.1 μm wide, intensely motile, gliding, with oscillation and clockwise rotation, not constricted at the ungranulated (or rarely granulated) cross-walls, gradually attenuated at the ends, ± bent, sometimes screw-like or ending (?) in a sickle. Cells 2-4x longer than wide, 3-9 (10) μm long; cell content with prominent cyanophycin granules (never carotenoid), sometimes near the cross-walls. Apical cells strikingly attenuated and hooked, ± spherically-capitate. Variable species, numerous subspecific taxa (of Oscillatoria splendida): var. attenuata W.et G.S. West 1896; var. fuellebornii Schmidle 1902; var. bacilliformis Playfair 1914; var. truncata Emoto et Hirose 1939; f. woronichinii Anisimova in Elenkin 1949; f. circinata (Kutzing) Forti 1907; f. phorinidioides (Hansgirg) Forti 1907; f. maior Kufferath 1929; f. uncinata Setchell et Gardner 1903; and others. Taxonomic value of all these taxa must be revised.  [details]
