From editor or global species database
Nomenclature The complex nomenclatural history of this species was explained by Ohnheiser & Malaquias (2013) who based their Philine confusa on Utriculopsis vitrea M. Sars, 1870 which they tentatively consider as distinct from Bulla vitrea M. Sars, 1866 (an objective synonym of Philine laevissima M. Sars, 1859). However, M. Sars (1870) considered his P. laevissima to be a senior synonym of Utriculopsis vitrea which he described as a new genus and species. Later G. O. Sars (1878) considered that
U. vitrea was described based on specimens from two different species; he ascribed the shells to Diaphana globosa (Lovén, 1846) (G. O. Sars, 1878: 290) and the animals to U. vitrea, which he reassigned to the genus Philine (G. O. Sars, 1878: 298).
In the view of Ohnheiser & Malaquias (2013), G. O. Sars’s concept of P. vitrea (= P. infortunata Pilsbry, 1895) refers to a different and potentially valid species. [details]
