Synonymy The older family group-name Mimasteridae is invalid since Mimaster Sladen, 1882 is a junior synonym of Radiaster Perrier, 1881.
The systematic position of this family and the genera which have referred to it have been in an almost continual state of flux, since it seems to have been a dumping ground for taxa of uncertain affinites. Affinities for one or another of the included genera or for the family with the Solasteridae, Goniasteridae, Astropectinidae, Odontasteridae and Ganeriidae have been suggested. The most recent position (Blake, 1987) is allied to the Astropectindiae in the order Paxillosida.
Gephyreaster has recently been transferred to the Goniasteridae by Blake (1987). [details]
