Taxonomic remark Genus Alecto has no standing, as Alecto horrida is quite unrecognizable from the description or the figure, and the original specimen has been lost. Genus Alectro Say, 1825, is clearly an emendation of Alecto, as Say referred the genus to Leach (AH Clark, 1908). [details]
Type species AH Clark (1908) treated Alecto horrida Leach, 1815, as the type species of Alecto, as it was described first and was the only species illustrated. He also reported the species as "not recognizable" and noted that the original specimen, reported by Leach as in the British Museum, was lost. [details]
