Nomenclature The genus name Raspailia is here attributed to Nardo, 1833, but its original spelling was Raspelia. Named after the French scientist and politician Raspail, the name was corrected to Raspailia by Nardo himself in 1847. Schmidt (1862) confirmed this new spelling. Remarkably, Gray (1867) used two different spellings, Rasalia for the species R. viminalis Schmidt and Raspalia for R. typica Nardo, ignoring apparently Schmidt's statement that the two species were the same.
