Biology Type of larval development: not documented [inferred from prodissoconch morphology to be short planktonic, non-planktotrophic] [details]
Diagnosis Shell elongate, up to 15 mm, relatively compressed, strongly inequilateral and narrowing anteriorly. An obtuse keel running from the umbo to the posteroventral end. Exterior with radial ribs and with dense commarginal cords, sometimes confluent with each other, the ribs forming elongated tubercles where they overrun the commarginal cords. Colour generally reddish brown, also inside, sometimes paler or faded to greyish tones on old specimens, even live-taken.
Acar clathrata (Defrance, 1816) = A. pulchella (Reeve, 1843), a species of the Mediterranean circalittoral, differs by its white color and the external sculpture with strong radial ribs and commarginal lamellae forming scales as theu overrun the ribs. The ribs increase in size from the anterior part to the keel, then they are smaller and divergent (not radial) behind the keel.
