Biology Type of larval development: planktotrophic, inferred from multispiral protoconch. [details]

Diagnosis Shell up to 18 mm high, rather solid, fusiform with a slender spire. Protoconch with ca. 3.5 smooth, convex whorls, with a fine suprasutural thread on the last whorl and an angle of spire less acute than for the teleoconch whorls; rarely decollated. Teleoconch of 7-8 slightly convex whorls, the last one usually a little constricted. Aperture with thickened outer lip bearing inside 7-8 rounded denticles, of which the upper 3 or 4 are markedly larger; parietal edge meeting columella with a strong curvature, bordered by a narrow callus. Columella with 3-4 faint denticles on adults. Colour whitish to brownish, with large darker subsutural blotches and commonly with a paler band on the periphery of the last whorl.  [details]
