Description Length: 41-43 cm. Plumage: back and wings grey; collar on hind neck and underparts white; head with grey hood in breeding, white with suggestion of grey hood in non-breeding; outer primaries black. Immature darker ashy brown replaces grey of adult; hood incomplete. Bare parts: iris yellowish white; eyering bright red; bill bright red, dull blackish in immature; feet and legs bright red in breeding, dark red in non-breeding dress, reddish slate in immature. Habitat: seashore, estuaries and inland water bodies. Resident. <389><391><393> [details]
