Taxonomy Millepora cellulosa Linnaeus, 1758 was described with two diagnoses. The first was derived from Ellis, 1755 (pre-Linnean), and is considered to correspond to the species known now as Pentapora fascialis. The second description defined a fenestrate form similar to many phidoloporids. Linnaeus in 1767 used different information for M. cellulosa, excluding the Ellis (1755) reference, but including Millepora retepora Pallas 1766 in the synonymy. Subsequent workers have not improved the situation, leading Harmer (1933) to consider Retepora cellulosa (Linnaeus, 1767) as unrecognisable. [details]
