Nomenclature The name Brachidontes ustulatus (Lamarck, 1819) has been put forward by Huber (2010: 550) as a widely distributed species, with several synonyms. However, a recent molecular study (Sirna Terranova, Lo Brutto, Arculeo & Mitton, 2007) reveals that the Red Sea and Mediterranean populations, the East African populations and a population from Hong Kong represent three cryptic species of Brachidontes. This implies separating the Red Sea B. pharaonis from the East African B. variabilis. There is currently an established usage of the name Brachidontes ustulatus for the Western Australian species, and in view of the findings of Sirna Terranova et al., all three names (ustulatus, variabilis and pharaonis) are listed as "accepted". The correct name for the Hong Kong population is B. mutabilis (Gould, 1861) following Huber, 2010. [details]
Type locality The type locality mentioned by Lamarck is Brazil, but Lamy (1920: 416) argues that the collectors Péron & Lesueur never visited Brazil, but instead Australia, and two other lots from the same collectors from Australia are present in the Paris Museum. This indicates that Australia is the correct type locality for this species. [details]
