Type species De Gregorio (1885) did not designate a type species and included in his new genus Aplus, Murex plicatus "Brocchi" (i.e. Murex plicatus Gmelin, 1791, sensu Brocchi, 1814, based on Lister's (1688) pl. 939 fig. 34a), Buccinum dorbignyi Payraudeau, 1826 (spelled D'Orbignyi) and "all the species figured in Bellardi [1872], pl. 12 fig. 3-12, 21-23, 29-31" (i.e. 16 nominal species, including Murex plicatus sensu Brocchi). Brunetti & Della Bella (2014) propose to use this genus Aplus for European species hitherto placed in the genus Pollia Gray, 1834, and dismiss the usage of Anna Risso, 1826 because the type species Anna massena Risso, 1826 is a nomen dubium and possibly a species of Raphitoma (family Raphitomidae).
The type species of Aplus has been designated by Vokes (1971: 83) as Murex plicatus forma serzus De Gregorio, 1885, based on Bellardi's (1872) pl. 12 fig. 21. Brunetti & Della Bella (2014) ignored this and stated Murex plicatus forma nilus De Gregorio, 1885 as the type species.  [details]
