GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): History: Name from the city of Tauranga on the adjacent mainland, New Zealand. Lit. sheltered anchorage or landing place for canoes.    
Additional information (en): This north trending feature forms an extension further to the SW of the Tauranga Canyon. The name first appeared on NZ Coastal Bathymetry Series (CBS) chart 'Bay of Plenty' in 1973.
