GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Brazilian survey vessel "Sea Surveyor". Year of discovery: 1969. History: Named after Cdr Frederico Corner Montenegro Bentes (1937-2016), a Brazilian Hydrographer since 1964. He was a promoter of the Brazilian Marine Geology and one of the founder of the Brazilian Marine Geology and Geophysics Program (PGGM) in 1969. The PGGM guided the policy for oceanographic research in Brazil, to study the Brazilian Continental Margin and also integrate the country into international activities and researches. Cdr Bentes was in command of survey vessel "Canopus" from 1982 to 1984, conducting important surveys as part of the Brazilian Cartographic Plan. He was a member of the Brazilian Cartographic Society and a member of the Sea Level Working Group. Following his retirement from the Brazilian Navy, he worked for 20 years as advisor to the Director of Almirante Paulo Moreira Sea Institute (IEAPM), for coordination of the marine research program. |
