GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: U.S. research vessel "Robert D. Conrad". Year of discovery: 1989. History: Named after Zélia Gattai, a Brazilian photographer and famous writer (1916-2008). In 1949 she concluded a course in Phonetics and French civilization at Sorbonne University in Paris. She married Jorge Amado, a Brazilian famous writer, in 1945 (there is a Jorge Amado Seamount nearby). When Jorge died in 2001, Zélia was elected to replace him as chair of the Brazilian Letters Academy. Her works include nine memoirs, three children's books, a photo-biography and a novel. One of her bestseller "Anarchists, Thanks to God" became a famous miniseries at the Brazilian television. In France, she was declared an Honorary Citizen of the city of Mirabeau (1985) and won a Commendation for Arts and Letters by the French Government (1998). There is a statue in Salvador city where the couple, Zélia and Jorge, are side by side. Both Zélia Gattai Seamount and Jorge Amado Seamount are part of the Bahia Seamounts. |
