GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): History: Named in association with nearby Cape Foulwind, which Captain Cook named in 1770 after encountering rain, squalls, gales and sea swells there.    
Additional information (en): This feature forms a wide, flat-floored area with a bottom depth of 1000 m, offshore from the W coast of the South Island of New Zealand. The name first appeared on NZ Coastal Bathymetry Series (CBS) chart 'Foulwind' in 1979. Minimum depth (m): 1000. Maximum depth (m): 1500. Total relief (m): 500. Dimension: 50 km.
