GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: U.S. oceanographic research vessel "Eltanin". Year of discovery: 1972. History: Named in association with the nearby Caswell Sound ("Taitimu" in Maori language - "tai": tide; "timu": to ebb). Dual name adopted by the New Zealand Geographic Board in 2014. Caswell Sound was probably named after the British Captain George Caswell, who was reportedly in charge of the naval survey at Caswell Sound in the late 1930s. |
