Notes GEBCO: associated meeting, proposer and year of proposal (en): Associated meeting: SCUFN-27. Proposer: Mark Dyer, New Zealand Geographic Board (NZGB); and Adam Greenland, New Zealand Hydrographic Office (LINZ). Year of proposal: 2014.     
GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: U.S. oceanographic research vessel "Eltanin". Year of discovery: 1972. History: Named in association with the nearby Caswell Sound ("Taitimu" in Maori language - "tai": tide; "timu": to ebb). Dual name adopted by the New Zealand Geographic Board in 2014. Caswell Sound was probably named after the British Captain George Caswell, who was reportedly in charge of the naval survey at Caswell Sound in the late 1930s.    
Additional information (en): This flat topped and oblong feature is a large N-S trending ridge that is the westward border of Fiordland Basin, to the SW of New Zealand's South Island. The name first appeared on Oceanic Bathymetry Series (OBS) chart 'Resolution' in 1972. Minimum depth (m): 3500. Dimension: 150 km x 25 km.
