Notes GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Brazilian survey vessel "Sirius". Year of discovery: 2011. History: Named from the nearby coastal town of Ponta do Mel, in the Brazilian State of Rio Grande do Norte. The name of the town results from its location on a promontory (ponta), and also from the large number of bees living in this area (mel is the Portuguese for honey).    
GEBCO: associated meeting, proposer and year of proposal (en): Associated meeting: SCUFN-30. Proposer: Helenice Vital, Geology and Geophysics Laboratory of Rio Grande do Norte Federal University, Brazil. History: 2017.    
Additional information (en): This feature has a steepness of 25 to 35°. The name first appeared in 2015 in a scientific paper from Almeida, N., Vital, H., and Gomes, M.: "Morphology of submarine canyons along the continental margin of the Potiguar Basin, NE Brazil". Minimum depth (m): 115. Maximum depth (m): 1260. Total relief (m): 1145. Dimension: 0.4 km to 2.3 km wide x9.8 km long.
