GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Brazilian survey vessel "Sirius". Year of discovery: 2011. History: Named from the nearby coastal town of Ponta do Mel, in the Brazilian State of Rio Grande do Norte. The name of the town results from its location on a promontory (ponta), and also from the large number of bees living in this area (mel is the Portuguese for honey). |
