GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Japanese survey vessel "Takuyo". Year of discovery: 1997. History: Named after the Japanese novelist Osamu Dazai (1909-1948), during the early Showa period of Japan. At that time, it was common and popular for Japanese writers to be called by their first names. However, the last name Dazai is used here because the first name Osamu is very common as Japanese male name and therefore considered inappropriate. This feature is associated with the nearby Great Writers Seamount Province. |
