| Notes |
GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Japanese survey vessel "Takuyo". Year of discovery: 2002. History: Named after the Japanese novelist Shimei Futabatei (1864-1909), during the Meiji period of Japan. His work "Ukigumo" (Floating Clouds) in 1887 is widely hailed as Japan's first modern novel. He was accomplished in Russian and translated the work of Ivan Turgenev and other Russian writers into Japanese. Shimei is the first name as, at that time, it was common and popular for Japanese writers to be called by their first names. This feature is associated with the nearby Great Writers Seamount Province. |
