Notes Additional information (en): Feature description: A valley approximately 70km south of Banks Peninsula. History/Origin/Meaning: Rakaia is the Ngai Tahu dialectal form of 'rangaia', which refers to the practice of strong men standing in line to break the force of the water when crossing a river (Reed, 2010:337).

Additional information (en): Adopted from NZGB Gazetteer. This feature is located approximately 85 km S of Banks Peninsula, which is on the central E coast of the South Island of New Zealand. The name first appeared on Coastal Bathymetry Series (CBS) chart 'Ellesmere' in 1980. Also written "Seavalley" on charts. Minimum depth (m): 450. Maximum depth (m): 680. Total relief (m): 230. Dimension/size: 25 km long.

GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): History: Named in assocation with Rakaia River on the adjacent mainland of New Zealand's South Island. Rakaia is the Ngai Tahu dialectal form of 'rangaia', which refers to the practice of strong men standing in line to break the force of the water when crossing a river.
