History: 2019.,"Discoverer: Japanese survey vessel ""Shoyo"". Year of discovery: 2001. History: Named after the Japanese volcanologist and petrologist Dr. Masanori Sakuyama (1952-1984). As a young volcanologist at the University of Tokyo, he worked on the genesis of island-arc magma, resulting in a major influence on the world volcanological and geological community. He showed the clear evidence of magma mixing in an island-arc volcano in Japan for the first time. He died in an accident during field work in Iceland in 1984. To commemorate his contribution to the community, the Geological Society of Japan has established an award to honor young promising scientists: the Sakuyama Masanori A
