GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Japanese survey vessel "Takuyo". Year of discovery: 1997. History: Named after the Japanese novelist Soseki Natsume (1867-1916), during the Meiji to Taisho periods of Japan. He is regarded as the greatest writer in modern Japanese history. He is best known for his novels "Kokoro", "Botchan", "I Am a Cat" and his unfinished work "Light and Darkness". He was also a scholar of British literature and composer of haiku, kanshi, and fairy tales. From 1984 until 2004, his portrait appeared on the front of the Japanese 1000 yen note. He had a profound influence on almost all important subsequent Japanese writers. Soseki is the first name as, at that time, it was common and popular for Japanese writers to be called by their first names. This feature is associated with the nearby Great Writers Seamount Province. |
