Additional information (en): Feature description: A wave-cut reef approximately 75m long, extending from the shoreline of the beach east of Waimarama. NZTopo50 BL39 421847 to 422844. History/Origin/Meaning: Heretaunga Tamatea history:
‘Known to local Maori as a mahinga kai (food gathering place) the name Kuku Rock is a crude attempt at describing the gathering of the iconic seafood mussel species, the kuku. Paparewa is also a famed tauranga waka (landing place for canoes), a primary site of significance at Waimarama. The anchor stone of the Takitimu waka lies 100m north of this site.
The name Paparewa has already been recognised by local Council in the naming of the Paparewa Reserve immediately adjacent to the Paparewa Reef. Paparewa was the original Maori name for the wider local area of land and was recognised in the 1800s with the naming of the Paparewa (Land Court) Block.’
