GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Japanese survey vessel "Takuyo". Year of discovery: 1985. History: Named after Dr. Joyo Ossaka (-2011), a Japanese volcanologist. He worked on active volcanoes in the Japanese archipelago and the Izu-Ogasawara Arc (i.e., Shichito-Io To Ridge). He was an adjunct scientist of the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Department of Japan, and he made many volcanologic observation flights on the active maritime volcanoes around Japan, contributing to the safety of navigation in this area. |
