GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: U.S. research vessel "Robert D. Conrad". Year of discovery: 1973. History: Tupinambá refers to all Brazilian indigenous groups that spoke variations of the Tupi language during the first stages of the Brazilian colonization period in the 16th century and lived in coastal areas. For many years they were considered extinct, however in 2009 an indigenous group of 4700 individuals were recognized as Tupinambá in the Bahia State. In the past, they used to hunt, fish and practice agriculture. Their past habits also included cannibalism and production of war tools. Nowadays, they speak Portuguese and live as fishers and farmers. |
