GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Philippines survey vessel "Hydrographer Presbitero". Year of discovery: 2009. History: Named from the bitaog tree (calophyllum inophyllum), a drought-tolerant and slow-growing tree that thrives in the forests and coastal areas of the Philippines. The bitaog is considered as an ornamental plant and its hard wood is used for carving, furniture and boat making. It has been proven that the bitaog existed even before 1523 in Magallanes, Agusan del Norte. Accordingly, it was given the title Philippine Centennial Tree in 1998.
