GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Philippines survey vessel "Hydrographer Presbitero". Year of discovery: 2004. History: Named from the Kalios tree (Streblus asper), also known as Sand Paper tree due to the very rough texture of its leaves on both sides. This tree thrives from Northern Luzon to Mindanao regions and is favoured by local wildlife for its fruit. It is drought-tolerant, which is good for soil erosion control and sediment retention. It is also proven to have antiseptic, antifilarial and antipyretic properties. |
