GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Chilean vessel AGS "Cabo de Hornos". Year of discovery: 2020. History: Named from the Chilean Navy officer, Second Pilot Luis Pardo Villalón (Piloto Pardo, in Spanish), who led in 1916 the heroic rescue of the crew of Sir Ernest Schackleton´s expedition on brig “Endurance”, wrecked in Antarctica. Pilot Pardo, in command of the fragile Chilean vessel “Yelcho”, successfully overcame the icy and turbulent waters of the southern seas to recover alive all the shipwrecked Englishmen from the Antarctic territory. The feat of Pilot Pardo, which occurred near this geographical feature, is a remarkable nautical event that is highlighted and admired by the world to this day.
