GEBCO: discoverer and year of discovery (en): Discoverer: Philippines survey vessel "Hydrographer Ventura". Year of discovery: 2001. History: Named from the village of Canipaan, city of Rizal, in the Philippines province of Palawan. The name of this coastal settlement is believed to have been taken from a Filipino term meaning "a swamp of nipa palm trees”. The village is also known for its crocodile sanctuary in Canipaan River.
